THCU's exemplary health communication web tour

This page was last updated July 15, 2004.

These sites are intended to introduce the incredible array of organizations that are producing exemplary websites. This list is by no means complete; please visit THCU's list of IHC links for additional starting points.

American Cancer Society
In the medical domain, the American Cancer Society has developed the Cancer Survivors' Network for the stories and voices of real people.

Let’s Make a Meal!
This interactive game, one of many good sites relating to lifestyle, “allows you to choose various menu items for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and compares your choices against the food guide servings recommended by Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.” New July 15, 2004

MediaWatch
This site is a good choice for the broad determinants of health. They provide practical tools and specific ways to get involved, and resources–an empowering site. Updated July 12, 2006

GreenPeace
GreenPeace also provides a number of ways for interested users to become involved. For example, under the campaign looking at toxic products, users can learn about chemicals and how they affect the body, send emails to friends and/or email petitions to corporations and/or government, and find out which home and body products are “green.” New July 15, 2004

Philip Morris
Remember not to limit your tour to traditional public health sites—there are other sites on health promotion issues. For example, visit Philip Morris, particularly their health advice for smokers and useful links. This site meets most of the criteria for good IHC, but is it health promoting?

Heart and Stroke Foundation
The Heart and Stroke Foundation has created a number of online, interactive tools. For example, the health risk assessment area of the site has Blood Pressure Risk Assessment and Heart and Stroke Risk Assment tools.

Kids Help Phone
Launched in 2002, this website adds online counselling services to Kids Help Phone. The service is confidential and anonymous and kids can talk to counsellors online and research topics of interest.
