Introduction to sustainability

Sustainability is a broad term, generally referring to continuation. We believe there are 4 components of sustainability in health promotion.

  1. Sustaining the issue involves keeping awareness of the issue high on the agenda of all stakeholders including the public, community partners and decision makers.
  2. Sustaining behaviour changes means building skills, creating supportive physical structures, and modifying the social environment so that it is supportive of healthy behaviours.
  3. Sustaining programs involves integrating one or more related activities (a program) such as an awareness campaign, a support group, or educational sessions into one or more existing organizations who agree to take responsibility for the program over the long-term.
  4. Sustaining the partnership is about creating and maintaining productive working relationships and maximizing the benefits of addressing an issue with a diverse group of stakeholders.

In our overview of sustainability workbook (PDF) and Overview of sustainability workshop we teach a 6 step process for achieving sustainability in the above 4 components.
