This resource is designed to help workplace health promotion intermediaries in Ontario to:

The information presented in the resource is meant to increase the likelihood that practitioners will use effective situational assessment tools in their work.

It contains information about 42 recommended and promising tools in six categories: needs assessments, health risk appraisals, workplace environmental audits, employee interest surveys, current practice surveys, and organizational culture surveys.

This resource also provides guidelines and principles related to situational assessment tools, methodological information for practitioners interested in conducting their own reviews, as well as future recommendations for the project.

In 2005 eighteen review panel members were recruited, trained and provided with a web-based application to examine, in pairs, 35 situational assessment tools (3 – 5 tools each). This resource represents the results of their examination. In 2010 a second review panel was put together consisting of fourteen members who reviewed a further 31 tools gathered since the catalogue was first published. Previous tool summaries were also revised and re-published with the most up to date information.

What’s Inside?

Project Overview — an introduction to the project, a conceptual look at comprehensive workplace health promotion, situational assessment tools and best practice, along with principles of good practice and guidelines for how to select a tool.

Methodology — the process used to determine the tools for the catalogue and discussion of future recommendations.

Complete Tool Listing – an alphabetical listing of all 42 tools in the catalogue. From there, you can click on each tool name to access the tool summaries.

A complete tool summary gives more details on the tool’s characteristics as well as implementation and evaluation of the tool. Selected reviewer comments (strengths, limitations and general feedback) are also included.

Resource Listing — a listing of the tools themselves and/or tools with supporting documents (such as final reports, related journal articles, and other relevant materials) that can be accessed directly from this web site.

Making Tool Comparisons — two charts summarize the characteristics of all the tools (Cabin Guide) or the effective, plausible and practical ratings of all tools (Star Chart).

Glossary — provides definitions to terms used throughout the resource.

Icon Legend — Icons have been attached to particular tool characteristics to assist in identifying the attributes of each tool.  The icons are used in the Cabin Guide, as well as in each tool summary.
