Workshop topics

YETP consists of two-day “Train-the-Trainer” workshop series on the following two topics in four different regional locations:

  1. Making Change Work in Youth-Serving Agencies

Change is about balancing the desire to stay the same, against the need to improve while still meeting the needs of youth who come to the youth centre or youth-serving organization. This workshop session will follow a 11 step model to train participants in the process of starting and implementing an organizational change project. Youth centres and youth-serving organizations go through change for many different reasons: increase tobacco programming for youth, improving youth centre image, increase awareness, and recruit youth. But groups only complete change projects because the change makes the organization better. The benefit of starting and finishing a change project related to youth tobacco issues is that it addresses an issue that needs constant attention. However, the process is good for any issue!

  1. Youth Action Guide for Tobacco Projects

This workshop session assumes a level of understanding and experience in running youth groups. This workshop session will take participants through the four stages involved in running youth groups. The workshop aims to assist and educate youth and those involved with youth to develop, implement and evaluate a youth action project focused on a tobacco issue within a community. All the stages that this workshop will unravel are important in successfully facilitating youth action. However, the learning outcomes of this workshop can be easily modified to use with youth for issues other than tobacco.

What is expected of you?

It is desirable that participants have a plan to start a project prior to attending the youth engagement and organizational change workshops.

Teams are preferred rather than individual attendees.
Participants, especially adults/staff should ideally attend both the workshops so that a more comprehensive training in youth engagement can be obtained.
Given these workshops are titled “Train-the-Trainer” workshop series, it is expected that the workshop participants will go back to their agencies, and recruit and train people to build and support youth engagement projects.
Parental consents for participating youth below 18 years of age should be arranged by the youth organization or school that the youth represent.
Finally, you HAVE to register by September 16, 2005 to avail and qualify for certain travel subsidies.

Note: Although the above terms are preferred, participants who have no project in mind or those who would like to attend individually instead of in a team are also strongly encouraged to attend the workshops.

What you need to know about travel subsidies

Attending the youth engagement training workshops may involve certain travel and accommodation expenses for some of the workshop participants. To make your participation more affordable, a portion of the project grant has been allocated for reimbursing participants for their travel and accommodation expenses, and in some cases their replacement costs/relief time.

Participants who need to drive for more than two hours (one way) may qualify for accommodation and mileage reimbursements. Participants who need to drive for more than four hours (one way) may qualify for airfare and accommodation.

However, due to budget limitations, THCU may not be able to accommodate all financial expectations of all participants. Nevertheless, we will do our best to reimburse the full amount or at least a percentage of the total expenses incurred that directly relate to a participant attending the workshop (s). For this purpose, we urge you to estimate your travel (airfare/train fare/mileage), accommodation and replacement costs on the workshop registration form.

THCU will work in conjunction with the host to confirm your refund amount after September 16, 2005.

Please read the University of Toronto policy carefully to understand the terms of reimbursements.

All expense claims MUST HAVE ORIGINAL RECEIPTS. Photocopies will not be accepted. If original receipts are not included, the related expenses will not be reimbursed. For airline tickets, please include the ticket stub and/or your boarding pass (especially for electronic tickets). An invoice from a travel agent is not sufficient.

If you need your original receipts returned for your own records, please indicate this as appropriate. The university will stamp the receipts, indicate the portion they have reimbursed you for and return the documents by mail.

U of T’s meal allowance is $50 per day: $10 for breakfast, $15 for lunch and $25 for dinner ($15, $22.50, $37.50 = $75 CDN international).

U of T’s mileage allowance is $.40 per km.

For any other questions or concerns, please contact Barbara Scott (Project Coordinator) at (416) 978-0596 or at yetp@thcu.ca.
